My Family's Favorite Way to Cook Green Beans

South Dakota locally grown green beans

We've tried sauteing them, roasting them, blanching them, canning them, and freezing them but this method is still our favorite way to cook green beans.

It's simple and fast to prepare them as a side dish and they can be seasoned several different ways so that they never become boring!

My Family's Favorite Way to Cook Green Beans

  • 1/2 lb green beans (or enough to feed your family)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 T. butter

Bring a pot of water to a boil.

Meanwhile, wash the beans, trim off the ends, and cut or snap into 1" pieces (great kid job!).

When the water is boiling, add the salt and beans (don't skip the salt- it makes a huge difference in texture and flavor!).

Cover and set a timer for 6 minutes.

After 6 minutes, take out a bean and taste it for doneness.  Continue cooking if you like them more tender (my family likes them cooked for about 8 minutes).

Drain when they reach your desired texture.

Add the butter to the hot beans and toss to coat.

Serve immediately or add some additional seasonings:

Asian

  • 1 T. coconut aminos
  • 1 tsp fresh grated ginger

Parmesan

  • 2-3 T. grated parmesan
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Pesto

  • 2 T. basil pesto
  • 2 T. pine nuts for crunch
